‘willie week’ series, part 3: picking up strays

Welcome! In today’s audio excerpt from the “Miltown Malbay” stop in our new hands-free app for motorists, you’ll hear about the students of the Willie Clancy Summer School, happening this week in County Clare.

Descending on this small seaside town from the four corners of the globe, students from 8 to 80+ are learning Irish traditional (or, “trad”) music from some of the most respected players and teachers in the world.

For many musical families, Willie Week has become a treasured annual pilgrimage. In fact, many of the school’s original students are now teaching at the school—with their own children and grandchildren in tow—ensuring the tradition lives on, stronger than ever.

This excerpt features Harry Hughes, a founder of the summer school. Narrators are award-winning actor Iarlaith O’Conaire and actress Geraldine Hughes, with audio production by Audissey Media.
